Birmingham Health Exchange -
accessible health promotion for hard to reach groups
CHALLENGE
When Birmingham Health Exchange was formed in 2006 to accelerate health promotion in the Heart of Birmingham it needed a complete, public health communication solution. Centred on Birmingham’s City Library and with supporters based in community centres, GP practices, local libraries and other sites throughout the Heart of Birmingham area, BHE needed to be able to offer health information, education, advice and local signposting to citizens, patients and their carers. Moreover, BHE’s focus was to be on the multi-ethnic and most challenged parts of the inner city, therefore “accessibility” of communications would be a key issue. BHE also wanted to invite citizens to become members of the Exchange so as to receive regular contact and support.SOLUTION
We developed BHE’s health website with full content management facilities so they could edit their local events calendar and other local services information. The site also included a membership administration section and database. To create a really rich source of health information for site visitors we added Intouch with Health’s “Public Health Information Service” comprising thousands of fact sheets on medical conditions, support groups and many other topics. This also included “Sounds Healthy”, Intouch’s collection of translated health information in a range of languages both in text form and, for those not literate in their own language, in audio form. To make the website and all its content as accessible as possible, we supplied BHE with touch screen kiosks to place in all its community sites and the Central Library, ensuring the service is available 24/7.
RESULTS
In only two years BHE has grown substantially in its community presence and the role it plays as chief provider of health promotion services to Heart of Birmingham PCT. The website has high volume traffic as do all of the kiosks in its various sites. BHE has asked us to help expand the services it can offer including early stage health risk detection in older patients using Intouch’s “Staywell” programme, and meeting the Department of Health’s requirement to start issuing “Information Prescriptions” to the patients and carers it serves.
