Integration is key to successful self-service where various proven options are available. These include the following:
- HL7 direct integration is the lowest initial cost option that creates a dedicated link between into... and the Trust Patient Administration System (PAS). This also has the lowest ongoing cost but may take some time for PAS suppliers, busy with the National Programme, to deliver one-off integrations.
Blue Prism (www.BluePrism.com) is an innovative integration technology that enables interaction with the PAS but requires no integration work to be carried out by the PAS supplier. This is achieved through creating application control functions which behave like objects, for example printing the day’s appointments, selecting a patient, updating the patient status to “arrived”, and updating the patient record. These secure updates are linked to a smartcard and so can update the NPfIT Spine.
